Lackey clinic is a faith-based nonprofit providing free dental care to adults without dental insurance. Our patients are the working class who earn too much to qualify for Virginia Medicaid but not enough to afford quality dental insurance, usually earning between $12-$25 an hour.
We serve uninsured adults in Virginia, who meet income requirements.

Dental Services We Provide
We are able to provide fillings, cleanings, and extractions. We ask for a contribution of $20 for dental appointments if patients are able to contribute.

Dental Only Eligibility Requirements
Your yearly income based on family size must be at or below the chart levels.
You must have no dental insurance or dental benefit. Medicaid is not accepted. If you have Medicare, Veterans benefits, or private medical insurance, you can apply for dental only.
You must live in Virginia.
You must be 18 years of age or older.

At Lackey Clinic we provide free dental care, such as fillings, cleanings, and tooth extractions, to adults in Virginia who are uninsured or don’t have dental insurance. It is important for all adults to have a full dental exam and checkup every six months in order to maintain good oral health.

We have three dentists on staff, a Dental Hygienist, and four Dental Assistants to provide professional and compassionate care.

Extractions
The spread of tooth infection and decay can be halted by removing the infected tooth. Eliminating the source of the problem is the most effective way to stop it from spreading. When dealing with crowding, tooth extraction is a viable option, too.
Tooth crowding is a common contributor to cosmetic and functional dental problems. When teeth crowd or overlap, it becomes more challenging to keep them clean, leading to dental problems. The condition regularly causes cavities, gum disease, and other dental issues.
If you’re in pain, your dentist may recommend pulling one or more teeth to alleviate the discomfort and give you a healthier, more functional smile. You will be able to eat and speak normally again once the decay and infection have been treated.
It’s up to you to decide whether to pull the tooth or keep it, but before you make a final call, arm yourself with as much information as possible. While preserving natural teeth is a constant goal, there are situations in which removal is necessary. For example, the only way to save a severely damaged tooth is to have it extracted. In addition, the tooth may need to be extracted if it is in poor enough shape that restoration is not a viable option.
Checkups and Cleaning
Don’t wait until you have a dental issue before scheduling a dental checkup. Regular checkups at the Lackey Clinic are essential for several reasons, not the least of which is that prevention is preferable to treatment in almost every circumstance.
Dentists will check for oral cancer and other forms of cancer in the head and neck. In addition, they will feel around your head and neck for any unusual growth. Any sores, ulcers, or other abnormalities in the mouth will also be looked for. Most of the time, these exams will turn up nothing wrong, but they could save your life if something serious is found.

Fillings and Crowns
The main advantage of dental fillings is that they stop the spread of tooth decay. Fillings are used to repair minor decay and stop it from spreading by blocking the bacteria that cause cavities.
Even though fillings replace a tooth’s decayed or broken part, they still leave most of the healthy tooth structure intact.
Fillings are less expensive and can be placed in a single visit to the dentist, while dental crowns are used to repair more extensive cavities but require multiple visits and can cost upwards of a thousand dollars. In addition, fillings usually last a few years longer than crowns.
Composite resin or amalgam are the two most common materials used to create fillings. Silver fillings, also known as amalgam restorations, are a mixture of silver, mercury, tin, and copper. About half of the compound is made up of mercury, which binds the other metals together to give them strength and durability.
Composite fillings are made of a ceramic and plastic compound that closely mimics the color of natural teeth.
Composite fillings often repair cavities in front teeth or other prominent mouth areas because they look just like natural teeth.
Lab and Dental X-Ray Services
Your dentist can get a better look at your oral health with the help of x-rays. Dentists, always looking to provide the best care possible, know that a visual inspection alone isn’t enough. X-rays of the mouth are a great diagnostic tool that can show your dental problems that aren’t obvious to the naked eye. In addition, dentists can prevent oral health problems before they even start by using x-rays for a precise diagnosis.
An x-ray shows the dentist not only the crown but also the roots and the bone beneath the gums. Your dentist can use these x-rays to understand better any isolated or rare symptoms you may be experiencing.
Radiographs allow dentists to detect various issues, from cavities and decay severity to bone loss, cysts, abscesses, and other masses that can be removed before they spread. Dentists can now quickly and accurately determine whether you have any missing or impacted teeth and the number of wisdom teeth you have.
Root Canals
Dentists frequently resort to root canal treatment (also known as endodontic therapy) to address such issues. Therefore, it’s natural to have questions if this is your first time hearing about the possibility of undergoing a root canal procedure.
The infected or damaged pulp is removed during root canal treatment. After the canal is cleaned, disinfected, and prepared for filling, the polymer material gutta-percha is typically used.
A dentist can treat a cavity in several ways. First, extracting the problematic tooth is a viable option for some patients. In the long run, this eliminates the need for additional measures to deal with tooth pain or cavities.
However, problems may arise from the resulting gaps in teeth after extraction. Root canal therapy ensures that teeth can be saved and the patient’s smile can be maintained.
Tooth decay typically results from an infection of the pulp. The pulp becomes infected when bacteria build up in this area. This infection persists in the pulp and can spread to nearby teeth if left untreated.
Gum Disease Treatment
The soft tissues around your teeth and gums can be severely damaged by gum disease. If you neglect gum disease, it may spread to the bone that anchors your teeth in place. Damage to the gums, or periodontitis, can result in a weakened bite and tooth loss. Although prevalent, periodontitis can often be avoided.
Gum disease is often caused by neglecting one’s oral hygiene. To decrease your risk of developing periodontitis and increase your chances of a successful treatment, brush at least twice a day. Don’t forget to floss, either.
Visit us at the Lackey Clinic, as directed. If you suspect you have periodontitis, you should see a dentist immediately. If periodontitis is caught early, it can often be treated successfully.
